Ulysses, the novel by James Joyce, is set in Dublin on 16 June 1904 and 16 June is the day that has been chosen internationally to celebrate the book and the writer.
Leopold Bloom is one of the characters, hence the choice of his name for Bloomsday. Since at APIBA, we get together to hold an Unconference, we thought it fit to celebrate an Un-Bloomsday, taking into consideration that the reading of such a book is a moveable feast that can take place on any day of the year and following the example set by Lewis Carroll in Through the Looking Glass where he coined the famous expression: ‘un-birthday’.
On Saturday June 8 from 10.30 to 12.30 we will attempt to explore the first episode of the novel. There will be a short introduction, a brief summary and an explication of some parts of the text that point to themes that recur throughout the work, followed by the reading of the episode.
The session will be facilitated by APIBA SIG Lit. Reading Group member SUSANA GULLCO GROISMAN, a graduate of the ISP JVG (Buenos Aires), trained in the Dynamics of Groups of Learners (Argentine Association of Psychology and Group Therapy). Tenured lecturer in Contemporary British Literature in alma mater institution (forty years). Former Head of English Department. Former APIBA President and Coordinator of APIBA Lit. SIG. Lit. facilitator at ESSARP (English Scholastic Association of the River Plate) since 1998.
